Empowering Minds Through Art: Raising Awareness on Eating Disorders

Grade 11 Psychology students undertook a meaningful initiative to raise awareness about eating disorders through the creative medium of art. This project, aligned with the curriculum’s focus on adolescent development and behavior, aimed to foster understanding, encourage open conversations, and promote mental health awareness within the school community.

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder are complex mental health challenges influenced by distorted body image, societal pressures, and emotional struggles. The students utilized art to communicate the emotional and psychological impact of these issues, creating visuals that resonated deeply with their peers.

One compelling piece, a poster featuring a measuring tape covering a girl’s mouth, powerfully symbolizes how societal standards of beauty can silence individuality and lead to cycles of self-criticism and destructive behaviors. This artwork served to highlight the physical and emotional toll of eating disorders while emphasizing the need for empathy, support, and open dialogue about mental health.

Through this initiative, the students successfully showcased the power of art as a tool for advocacy and education, leaving a lasting impact on the school community.

Editor's Desk

Inquiry is the essence of human progress—a spark that ignites the fire of learning and discovery. It is not merely about asking questions but daring to embrace the unknown, challenging assumptions, and seeking deeper truths.

In the journey of education, inquiry serves as our compass. It inspires us to explore uncharted territories, unravel complexities, and connect the dots between the seen and the unseen. For students, it becomes the gateway to creativity and innovation; for educators, it transforms teaching into a shared adventure of discovery.

Let us nurture a culture where questions are celebrated as much as answers, where curiosity is met with encouragement, and where learning is a lifelong quest. As we inquire together, we not only gain knowledge but also wisdom—the kind that shapes perspectives, builds character, and empowers us to envision a better future.

At The Pupil, let inquiry be the bridge between aspiration and action, the seed from which every great idea grows.

Inquiry: The Seed of Vision
In every heart, a question lies,
A quiet spark beneath the skies.
A single thought, a gentle "why,"
Can lift the soul and let it fly.

Each question asked, a path is made,
Through light and shadow, sun and shade.
The more we seek, the more we find,
The boundless strength of an open mind.

Let questions bloom, let wonder lead,
For they are roots to every seed.
In asking "how" and daring "when,"
We shape the world again, again.

Inquiry is the journey's start,
The voice of a curious, fearless heart.

Smog-Cycling: An Innovative Solution to Air Pollution

For centuries, human progress—from making fire to building factories—has driven development. Yet, this progress has come at a cost: a regressing natural environment. One of the most significant factors contributing to this global change is air pollution, a problem created by humans that we must solve now. Conventional solutions often fall short, prompting the need for innovative approaches like smog-cycling.

The Process of Smog-Cycling
Smog-cycling begins with devices like smoke absorbers and KAALINK installed on bus stands, billboards, and traffic signals. These devices collect and store smoke in cylinders, which volunteers then collect for recycling into useful products like AIR-INK and tiles.

AIR-INK and Sustainable  Tiles
AIR-INK is made from carbon-based pollutants captured and purified from exhausts and chimneys. The KAALINK device collects these pollutants, which are then converted into ink by mixing purified carbon with various oils. Additionally, tiles can be made from black soot (black carbon), a byproduct of burning fossil fuels. The soot is baked into cement designs, sometimes with banana peels and seaweed added for unique markings and colors.

A Call to Action
These initiatives are already in place in India, showing the potential for innovative solutions to improve air quality. Let's encourage and empower these ideas to make our world a better place to live. Let’s start it from our surroundings. And remember, there are many other things that can be made from just smoke.
