Percy Jackson Series
Author: Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan in an American author. He is best known for dealing with mythology. His first bestselling novel in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief published in 2005. He created the story of a dyslexic kid when one of his sons had reading difficulties. The story about Percy seemed to be the only one which his son enjoyed reading. He wanted to show his son that even a dyslexic kid could be a hero.
Book 1: The Lightning Thief
Book 2: The Sea of Monsters
Book 3: The Titan’s Curse
Book 4: The Battle of the Labyrinth
Book 5: The Last Olympian
The series is about a 12 year old dyslexic and ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) kid. Words always danced in front of his eyes. The entire series is from the perspective of Percy. Percy finds difficulty in remaining in a school for more than a year as trouble always seem to find him. The reason is because he is a half-blood, meaning one of his parent was human and the other was a god, and half-bloods are basically a mouth-watering full course meal to monsters. The only safe haven for half-bloods or demigods is Camp Half-blood. This is a place where demigods can live and train to fight monsters. Throughout the series we are introduced to many characters, however the 3 prominent ones are Percy, son of Poseidon, Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena and Grover, a satyr (half man, half goat). Percy loves his friends. We can see throughout the series that there is nothing he wouldn’t do for them. These friends become family to him. The life threatening adventures and the humour displayed throughout the series make it a wonderful novel. There is never a dull moment in any of the chapters in any of the books.
I recommend this book for any near the age of 10 or 11, however it need not be restricted to that age. I personally am 16 and this is still my favourite series. Many children are unwilling to read a book without pictures i.e. a novel. This book is, in my opinion, the best place to start. But I must warn you, once you start reading the series, it will be nearly impossible to stop. Do not be discouraged by the fact that the book has well above 200 pages. Those pages pass by in a flash and they leave you aching for more.
